Former World Champion, Igor Astarloa, has signed a contract to ride with Liquigas for 2006. The 29 year-old Basque rider will transfer from Barloworld-Valsir to the Italian ProTour squadra. Fellow Basque, Pedro Arreitunandia, who also rode with Barloworld-Valsir in 2005, will join Astarloa.
For a long time the 2003 World Champion had been linked with his old team, Lampre. Beppe Martinelli, Team DS for Lampre, and Astarloa had gone back and forth on contract negotiations, while at the same time Liquigas became an option. Having Astarloa on the team will allow Liquigas more options in the Classics, while Danilo Di Luca focuses on the Giro d'Italia.
Pedro Arreitunandia (31) is also a coup for the cool green team. In 2005 he won stages in the Vuelta a Murcia and the Euskal Bizikleta He will be a perfect training and racing partner for Astarloa on the Italian squadra.
