Sergiy Matveyev (Panaria-Navigare) nailed a nice result yesterday. The Ukrainian won the Firenze-Pistoia TT for the second year in a row. Lorenzo Bernucci may not be one of the first names you think of when you consider emerging Italian talent. The 26 year-old made a name for himself this last July when he won the stage to Nancy at the Tour de France. It was his first ever pro victory since he started in 2002, but he has always been a solid rider. It was a resurrection for the rider who resides in Pistoia: Last December he suffered from a training accident, resulting in a fractured left ankle and 60 stitches in his right knee. Bernucci then confirmed his Tour result in the second half of the season: 3rd in Züri Metzgete, 2nd in Tre Valli Varesine and domestique to Petacchi with the Squadra Azzurra.
In 2006 Bernucci will trade his Fassa Bortolo colors for T-Mobile pink. He will be dedicated to the service of Jan Ullrich on the German squadra. But his main objectives will come before the Tour: he wants to ride to victory on the pavé, where as an amateur he battled with Tom Boonen. BiciRace.com wishes Bernucci luck in his fifth year as a professional.
