Paolo Savoldelli saved the maglia rosa on the final day in the mountains, after virtually losing it on the penultimate climb. José Rujano sealed up the maglia verda with a fabulous stage win for the Selle Italia-Colombia squad.
Today, Stage 20, il Falco can enjoy himself on a flat stage to Milano, and the finish of the 88th Giro d'Italia. Simoni can finish satisfied that he gave all he had to win a third maglia rosa. Di Luca will wonder what would have been if he had not had cramped, but most likely the punchy Rujano would have stayed in third. Basso finished behind today, but is pleased with two stage victories. The Dust Devil is not Bergamasco, but he is excited for the Disco rider in Pink. Savoldelli saved the maglia rosa yesterday and the DD gives his thoughts, "If he had stayed at T-Mobile he probably would have toiled away in underachiever hell for the remainder of his career. He's far too classy a rider to suffer such an ignominious decline." Read the Dust Devil's Daily Wrap, Emotions Run High at the Giro
Maglia Rosa: Following yesterday's stage was an emotional roller coaster. First Savoldelli lost it, then it looked like Di Luca would get a podium spot, then Savoldelli regained his lead again. Good stuff! In the end Il Falco rode out of his skin to take his second Giro title. His final margin, barring disaster tomorrow, is 28". Amazing Rujano Guillen finished with a stage victory and on the podium 45" back. Poor Di Luca lost his podium, but is in a very respectable 4th place 3'26" back.
Maglia Ciclamino: Kudos for Bettini. His 15 point lead over second place Di Luca should be unassailable. Petacchi moved down a slot to finish third in the sprinter's competition with 129 points
Maglia Verde: Rujano said he wanted to win a stage and that's exactly what he did. Not only that, but he won the climber's jersey and capped it all off with a first ever podium spot for a Venezuelan. Not too bad. Teammate, Ivan Parra, finished second with 57 points, while Simoni was third with 45 points.
Maglia Azzurra: Quickstep did well to win two separate competitions. Fast-man Stefano Zanini swept the blue jersey of Intergiro champion. The ever consistent Sven Krauss finished second 18" back. Bettini rounded out third 21" back.
