As BiciRace.com reported on 30 March, Gilberto Simoni and Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Caffita) were reconnoitering Giro d'Italia stages 17 (Varazze - Limone Piemonte, 26 May) and 19 (Savigliano - Sestriere, 28 May). Stage 19 finishes with the climb of Le Valli Olimpiche and also includes the Colle delle Finestre. The Colle delle Finestre is a military road with the last 8K consisting of gravel and dirt.
While out training the dynamic-duo, Cunego (2004 Giro winner) and Simoni (2003 and 2001 Giro winner), had some male tempo (bad weather). They encountered snow at the top of Limone Piemonte and on the Colle delle Finestre but kept training until the roads forced them to turn back. The training seems to have paid off, Cunego preformed well in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco.

This year you will see Charly leading the Liquigas-Bianchi climbers over the highest passes from the South, to the North of Italy in the Giro d'Italia. Charly has been with some of the best setups in cycling from Mapei, Colpack, and now Liquigas-Bianchi. Read the interview to find out what BiciRace.com learned from Charly.
Former world champion Igor Astarloa (Barloworld) hopes to find good form for the Amstel Gold Race and to make his comeback in the peloton. He is suffering from an injury to his wrist and has missed almost the entire spring season. The 2003 World road race champion hopes to use the Amstel Gold Race as a warm-up for the upcoming La Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
Also in this Sunday's Amstel Gold Race is Alejandro Valverde, who skipped out on the Paris-Roubaix. Valverde has good chances in the Amstel Gold Race and it should suit a rider like him. He too will be on the list of favorites, in the following week, for La Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Startlist for Amstel Gold Race.
